From the website: While serving as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam, John Ponak dreamed of returning to his hometown of Kansas City and opening a restaurant. When he came back to "the world" he did just that, in an industrial part of town near the Kansas and Missouri Rivers where it became a landmark. Ponak's Mexican Kitchen's recipes are influenced by the Sonora region of Mexico, steeped in tradition and flavor for hundreds of years. We use only the finest ingredients and prepare them fresh throughout the day. It takes a little extra time and effort, but we think our customers are worth it. Now in our 4th decade, Ponak's Mexican Kitchen is still Kansas City's most popular Mexican restaurant, famous not only for its fresh food and casual, friendly atmosphere, but also for World Class Margaritas™ on tap! -John Ponak & Crew

There is definitely nothing fancy about this place but the fact that they have "market price" guacamole has my heart! Love the patron rocks margarita, the chips and salsa served immediately has a legitimately hot option (it is hard for me to find something with that much of a kick without specifically ordering it). Prices are cheap and the service is very friendly. The guacamole is basically straight avocado which I like!

Ponak's is in its 4th decade and I still love it! A hole in the wall type feel that was fameously flooded and they mark the flood line on the wall of the restaurant. It is a great casual place for Mexican and a margarita. Established in an industrial area, it provides a different feel than many other restaurants in KC which makes it even more fun.
