The Boarding House

I visited twice in the spring. On the first visit we stopped in the bar for a drink after dining at another restaurant. Chris was our server and he was terrific. His recommendations fit exactly what we had a taste for, and he was a delight! On the second visit we had dinner in the dining room. It was fine, but after Chris I expected a little more from the service. We asked for recommendations for both food selections and wine pairings--again, fine but didn't quite hit the mark.

I only sat at the bar and had drinks and an appetizer but we did take a tour of the place. There are 3 levels and they are all beautiful. The margaritas I had were great and the poutine we ordered was good. I would go back and I may actually prefer sitting at the bar to the dining room. And I loved the music, GNR, Journey, etc. it was an unexpected and a fun element.

I was there two days in a row over the weekend, if that says anything! The restaurant is not open yet, but the bar area on the fist floor has several food offerings, including charcuterie, cheeses, pizzas, sliders, etc. I was amazed at how well executed everything was, given it was opening day. I tried the pork tots, very unique and fun to try. Loved the chicken poutine pizza and the short rib slider was delicious with no shortage of meat, which was refreshing! I cannot wait to try the full restaurant menu, it looks amazing. The wine list was great, it had both standard and unique varietals and a nice variety from a price perspective by the glass in case you feel like splurging as well. The viognier by the glass was outstanding. The place is cozy, sophisticated and the staff made us feel so welcomed - also refreshing for this neighborhood, where newer/chic places can be a bit on the snobby side. I am so looking forward to going back!

We were lucky enough to be a part of the soft opening night at Alpana Singh's The Boarding House and cannot wait to go back for the full menu. The venue is stunning as soon as you walk in and you can definitely tell a lot of hard work went into the design. The bar menu is inventive and full of various options. Our favorite was the Chicken Poutine Pizza. Literally mouth watering and full of flavor. Don't miss! Also a must try are the pork tots. Pulled pork stuffed in large tots?? AMAZING. Great wine list, awesome service, beautiful surroundings make for a wonderful new addition to the chicago food scene. Make your reservations now for dinner...this place is going to be a huge hit.
